The district surrounding the dam was called the Bronx.

It was in this district that well-known author Gabrielle Roy lived, around 1947, following her return from France and the publication of her book entitled Bonheur d'occasion. According to residents' testimonies, she lived opposite the Lachine Rapids, near Penniston House.
