Verdun, a dry city

You want to quench your thirst with a beer? That was practically impossible until just recently. In fact, the unrestricted sale of alcoholic beverages was prohibited on Verdun territory until 2015. In establishing the municipality of Verdun in 1875, one of Council's first bylaws was to prohibit the sale of alcoholic beverages, subject to a fine of $50 or a three-month prison term.

It was not until 1929 that Verdun's Council consented to the sale of bottled alcoholic beverages in grocery stores and 2011, to the issuance of a liquor licence with the obligation to produce such alcoholic beverages on site. For a long time, Verdunites therefore had to quench their thirst in taverns located in other nearby municipalities.
