Which Aboriginal nation attacked the settlement of Lachine before dawn on August 5, 1689?

A. Iroquois

B. Huron

C. St. Lawrence Iroquoian

For the answer ...

Answer: A

On the morning of August 5, 1689, 1,500 Iroquois warriors launched a surprise attack on the small settlement of Lachine. Houses were burned and close to a hundred French colonists were killed or taken captive, many never to be heard from again. The raid, which left the entire colony traumatized, was sparked by conflict over possession of the territory and control of the fur trade between the English and the French and their respective Native allies.

At the time, the village of Kahnawake did not exist. The only Iroquois living near Montréal were Catholic converts at the Jesuit mission, allied with the French. The attackers came from outside the area.
