Boats at the canal entrance, about 1950

Before the Great Depression of 1929, close to 15,000 ships transited the Lachine Canal each year. In 1959, when the St. Lawrence Seaway opened, the canal was being used only by companies located on its banks. It was closed to all navigation in 1970 but reopened to pleasure boating in 2002.
